Oh hell yeah, baby! I’m back just in time for a month I arbitrarily dedicated to the Sony PSP because I was playing a bunch of its games two years ago. I got a couple of reviews in the drafts folder, and I plan on uploading some more custom creations for various PSP games (that Cladun screenshot above is a little preview), which I would like to post after I get off my fat lazy ass and get a whole “projects” page made for all the mods and stuff I’ve done over the years, that way you won’t have to go on a scavenger hunt.
It’s been a few weeks, but I’m starting to feel good about things again, and I’m starting to feel good about the PSP, a great handheld that everyone talks shit about for not being the Nintendo DS. Also, Sony’s really, really fucking bad marketing and worse management at the time not helping any. But it ruled despite all that, and along with the DS, represented the end of an era where there was an actual difference between gaming systems. Also the end of an era where major companies could still release experimental games without the fear of going bankrupt. I’ve covered PSP games that fit fairly well within established game design conventions, and I’m looking to change that up a little bit this year by covering some off-beat stuff.
I know I mention this all the time, but that mid-late 2000s period of games might genuinely be my favorite time period. This in spite of a lot of horrible things: DLC replacing well-made expansions, games press pivoting to casual racism and homophobia, Call of Duty, chasing trends to such a degree that even the developers and publishers of the most blatant rip-offs of Sonic and Street Fighter would be ashamed of you, Bethesda owning Fallout, the allure of “prestige” games, the lingering stench of the post 9/11 world dripping into every little thing, and so many other problems. As I said before, the last true era of creativity and experimentation. Not that games since then haven’t been great, creative, or original, but they feel like exceptions to an increasingly large rule. It’s always nice to dip my toes in the past.
Anyways, this is just a post to let people know that 1) I’m doing another PSP month, and 2) I’m doing posts in general again.
